Smile

I used to admire your smile
A shield to the pain
Ever sturdy, firm ne’er wavering
But your eyes, they give it away.

What courage those pearly soldiers
protecting forces without
Or was it the inside rather
Yes, the fear, misery and doubt.

They never share the secrets
of tissues and pills and more;
They’d never confess if questioned
the misery behind closed doors.

But my admiration is slipping
replaced by pity most all
Your smile isn’t the victor
you’re its hostage behind the wall.

Dismiss I say, “The cheats!”
Relinquish to her your guard.
Lend the pain a face
So the healing can start.

I believe the hurt will mend,
When abandoned the facade;
Put all lies to bed,
For truth triumphs all.
